Description:

Using Recond Alum harening Converter

Unhardened emulsions are easily scratched when wet, and absorb moisture when dry. Adding
Record Alum Hardening Converter to a fixer solution is one method of toughening emulsions
to be more resistant to abrasion and water absorption. If used correctly, it will increase archival
permanence by protecting emulsions.

All B&W Films require alum hardening converter in the fixer.

Resin-Coated Prints require alum hardening converter to prevent scratching, and for a hard
gloss on glossy finish papers.

Fiber-Based Prints should only be hardened if prints are to be dried on hot drums, or if
emulsion is very soft. Fiber prints are hardened during manufacture, as well as by exposure to
heat, light, and air, so additional hardening may be harmful.

Archival Permanence

Alum Hardening will promote archival permanence if correctly timed and well-washed. Excess
hardening will make prints brittle, curly and difficult to wash and tone to archival specifications.
Alum-hardened films and prints cannot be thoroughly washed with water alone. Use
Archive Fixer Remover as directed when washing. Treatment with Archive Fixer
Remover will insure thorough washing and even toning. For complete directions on washing,
please see instructions for Archive Fixer Remover.

Whenever a hardening fixer is used, Block Stop Bath working solution must be used as
directed before fixing to provide the correct acid environment.

One liter of Record Alum Hardening Converter will convert 66.6 liters of 1:9 Record
Print Fixer working solution, or 33.3 liters of 2.8 Record Film Fixer working solution.

How To Mix

Add Record Alum Hardening Converter concentrate to Record Speed Fixer working
solutions in a ratio of 15 ml Converter to every 100 ml Fixer concentrate in the working
solution.

Choose the desired working solution from the examples below.

Hardening Film Fixer:

Dilute Record Speed Fixer concentrate 2:8 with water. To Each liter of diluted fixer, add
30ml of RECORD Alum Hardening Converter concentrate.

For Example:

200ml Record Speed Fixer Concentrate

800ml Water

+ 30ml Record Alum Hardening Converter Concentrate

= 1030ml Record Hardening Film Fixer Working Solution

Hardening Print Fixer:

Dilute Record Speed Fixer concentrate 1:9 with water. To each liter of diluted fixer, add
15ml of Record Alum Hardening Converter concentrate.

For Example:

100ml Record Speed Fixer Concentrate

900ml Water

+ 15ml Record Alum Hardening Converter Concentrate

= 1015ml Record Hardening Print Fixer Working Solution

Hardening Stop Bath:

Dilute Block Stop Bath and Archive Fixer Remover concentrates with water in the proportions
described below. To each liter of this working solution, add 30ml Record Alum Hardening
Converter concentrate.

For Example:

40ml Block Stop Bath Concentrate

60ml Archive Fixer Remover Concentrate

900ml Water

+ 30ml Record Alum Hardening Converter Concentrate

= 1030ml Hardening Stop Bath Working Solution

When mixing other quantities of hardening stop bath, please be sure to maintain the correct
proportions and order of procedure described above.

How To Use

Hardening Film and Print Fixers:

Fix for 1-3 minutes as directed by instructions for using Record Speed Fixer. Hardening
increases with immersion time. To reduce hardening, shorten immersion time.

Hardening Stop Bath:

Immerse films or prints for 3-6 minutes with constant agitation, as directed by instructions for
using Block Stop Bath.

Compatibilty

Record Alum Hardening Converter is compatible with Sprint products only. Do not mix
with other brands of fixer. Do not mix other brands of hardener with Sprint products. Before
toning or spot coloring, hardened prints must be treated with Archive Fixer Remover and
washed, as directed by instructions for using Record Speed Fixer.

Capacity & Shelf Life

Record Alum hardening Converter does not change the capacity of Record Speed Fixer.

Record Alum Hardening Converter, stored with or without air in the container, has a shelf life
of at least 2 years. Working solutions of Record Speed Fixer will have one-half their
indicated shelf life when Record Alum Hardening Converter is added.

CA Proposition 65

Attention to all California residents, Proposition 65 or officially known as, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a law that requires warnings be provided to California consumers when they might be exposed to chemicals identified by California as causing cancer or reproductive toxicity. The warnings are intended to help California consumers make informed decisions about their exposures to these chemicals from the products they use. The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) administers the Proposition 65 program and publishes the listed chemicals, which includes more than 850 chemicals. August 2016, OEHHA adopted new regulations, to go into effect on August 30, 2018, which changes the information that is required in or on Proposition 65 warnings.

We want you to know and be aware of our product safety and Midwest Photo is taking all of the necessary steps to comply with the applicable safety and health requirements made by this Proposition 65.

WARNING: This product may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

This disclaimer can be found on the product pages on our website under the Additional Information tab which appears below the product description. It is listed on all product pages to ensure that our customer is aware of the warnings put out by our suppliers so you can know the precautions before purchasing.
